What to Expect on Board

Cephalopod fishing is a unique style of angling that relies on tactical movement, visual attraction, and tactile strikes:

• Tactical Vertical Jigging: Instead of baited hooks, squid and cuttlefish are caught using purpose-built squid jigs (egi). The crew will demonstrate how to impart erratic darts and slow flutter falls through the water column to provoke aggressive strikes.

• Target Species: Trips aim directly for common squid and cuttlefish cruising the coastal marks off Exmouth.

• Lure Fishing Action: Part of the session incorporates light-lure casting and retrieving, giving anglers opportunities to hook predatory coastal species passing through the local tide runs.

• Keep or Release: Any legal-sized catch is yours to take home fresh for the kitchen or safely unhook and return to the sea.

Practical Information for Your Trip

• Seasonal Window: Squid and cuttlefish migrate through South Devon waters during specific seasonal windows. Spaces are strictly limited by run timing and vessel capacity.

• Weather & Clothing: The Southern Angler is an open sea-fishing vessel without passenger saloon cover. Please check conditions beforehand and wear warm layers, waterproofs, and non-slip footwear. (Keep in mind squid can squirt ink when landed—dark or casual clothing is best!)

• Facilities on Board: The vessel has an onboard toilet and basic refreshments available for purchase.

• Dogs: Well-behaved dogs and assistance dogs are welcome on board.
